Following the local government elections, now is a good time to suggest to your local council that they study this report from Re-Invest Scotland and take action. We want them to divest from fossil fuel and re-invest in socially and environmentally beneficial projects, including services like renewable energy and social housing.

The campaign partners: Common Weal, UNISON Scotland and Friends of the Earth Scotland believe councils should take the opportunity to lead the pensions industry out of its short-term thinking and towards an investment practice that takes on the biggest challenge of our age: climate change.

It’s time for Scottish funds to step up to the mark and live up to local government climate change commitments. Pension funds could be invested in services like clean energy and housing that UNISON members actually need.

Branches can make the case that our retirement money should not be used to harm the environment by adding to climate change. Use the full March 2017 report and for more information, in more ‘bite-sized’ details, see the Re-Invest Scotland website.
